Benjamin Edelberg - Chorus

2:19, 2014, Video Art

Chorus studies the iconic reaction shot, the ambiguity of face when taken out of context. I have woven together moments from film and video history; faces from the early 20th Century silent era will collide with contemporary material, such as wrestling videos, daytime talk shows, and Hollywood blockbusters. I am particularly interested in how the expressions are reinterpreted by the viewer; a moment of horror is gratification, a moment of joy, one of rage. With this removal of context, the individual expressions are now free to respond to one another, which creates a visual dialogue or call and response. The accumulated markings from animation processing will distort and repurpose these moments while embracing the conflicts between facial expressions.
