Your film is about?
First: I re-use my sculpture figures. They symbolize different kind of personalities. Second: I wanted to make a mysterious, subconscious atmosphere of the absurdity of human life.
How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
I am a sculptor; studied in Finnish Academy of Fine Arts during 1982-1986. In 2012 I started to study making videos. I did not need concrete materials any more but immaterial: time, motion and light. Moreover I wanted to give a new life for some of my sculptures.
Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts you use and what is important to you?
If I use my sculptures, the contents of the video comes from the contents of the sculptures. The connection between a human being and other nature, especially trees and plants is very important and inspiring for me. Moreover psychological and existential issues are very near me.
How long do you usually work on one project?
I have done only one longer film: 40 minutes. To make the sculptures and film took me one year. Now, when I make about 2-5 minutes videos, it takes about 2-7 days to finish them.
Do you carefully plan the production process or do you work more intuitive?
In those videos where I am myself performing, I plan the process quite well. But very often I work just by intuition and make the final decisions in editing process.
How does the title relate to the work, and how do you find a fitting title?
Mostly i "just know" the title by intuition.
Where do you get your ideas or inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from my inner experiences of life and the observations of outer life.
How important is sound in film, and if you use sounds, do you create your own or use existing?
The sound must fit in the atmosphere which I want to get to the film. In some videos I make the sounds myself with my voice. Some have the sounds of nature and some have existing music.
How important is the reaction to your film by the audience?
Of course it feels good if you get positive feedback!
What is your next project about?
I have many plans to make.
